Arak Petrochemical Complex is one of the country's infrastructure and significant projects. It was established and put into operation in line with the general policies adopted for developing petrochemical industries, both for meeting the country’s domestic requirements and export of the products.

The project was initially approved in 1984. After putting behind design, engineering and installation stages its first production phase became operational in 1993.

In further developing the project and in order to ensure a sustainable improvement with increased output and varieties of products, other units were completed and put into operation, the last of which was Ethoxylate Unit which was completed and went on production phase in 2003.

Starting 2000 and concurrent with other units completed, the Complex development project was approved with the aim of increasing the capacity of various units. The first phase of such plan was executed in September 2005 and the second one in summer of the year 2007. Having completed the development phase, total production capacity of the Complex increased up to 1,469,000 tons per year.
