The first step to establish the Iranian Geotechnical Society (IGS) has been taken in August 1971, after the first general assembly meeting of geotechnical experts in 19th August of that year. The meeting was hold after the attendance of Prof. H.B. Poorooshasb, and Dr. H. Dezfoulian in the meeting of members of Soil Mechanic and Foundation Committees in the Fifth Regional Asian Conference in Bangkok. The establishing committee was selected for preparing the society’s article of constitution and formal warranty of organizing the society was given to Prof. Poorooshasb in September 1971. The first Board of Directors was selected after preparation and approval of society’s article of constitution. The society was accepted as a member of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) in 1974. The annual membership for that year was paid by Jioco, Dames and Moore and Tehran Berkeley Companies in May 1975. After glorious victory of Islamic Revolution, Society’s Article of Association had been subjected to some amendments and changes requested by the Ministry of Interior. These were announced in the official journal on January 18,1984, and its links with the International Society has been established again since January 1985. In recent years, progressive activities have been carried out for preparing national regulations, extending relationship with the International Society and also professional cooperation between society members. Articles of constitution of the society were revised again in 1993 under the new rules requested by the Ministry of Interior.
