Khouzestan Petrochemical Company is the first plant in the Middle East to produce polycarbonate and epoxy resins , two major engineering polymers .

Since the complex’s products will not only cause the country’s industry and economy to flourish , and help cut back on importing added-value goods , thereby reducing the amount of foreign currency spent on purchase , the NPC’s board of directors approved the project after studying the initial technical and economic reports . after the preliminary technical , engineering economic feasibility studies were completed , contracts were signed for purchasing licenses , and basic and detailed engineering and equipment needed for the project .

Khouzestan Petrochemical Company was founded on 17 march 1998 to implement the project designed to produce engineering polymers , within the special Economic Zone at Bandar Imam .

Khouzestan petrochemical Complex has eight processing units , consisting of CO generation unit , CO separation unit , phosgene production unit , Bisphenol A production unit , Epoxy Resins unit , Polycarbonate unit , chlorine compression and purification unit , and chlorine absorption unit . the complex has numerous utilities , which will be described further on .

The complex was inaugurated on June 2004 , thanks to the Iranian petrochemical industry’s hardworking , devoted specialists and their experienced managers .

The successful implementation of this project marks a new chapter in the growth of the Iranian petrochemical industry . these changes are being carried out by the efforts those involved in Iran’s industrial sector , and their dedication to endeavor , creativity and excellence .

Geographical Location

The engineering polymers project is located in site 4 of the Petrochemical Special Economic Zone (PETZONE) at Bandar Imam khomeini .

Incentives for Constructing the Complex

Having assessed the supply / demand figures for engineering polymers in Iran and in the world , the National Petrochemical Company decided to implement a project to establish an Engineering Polymers Complex to fulfill the following objectives :

Providing feedstock for downstream Iranian production units , cutting back foreign currency expenditure .
Entering global export markets and generating foreign currency income by exporting products not needed for domestic consumption .
Moving towards self-reliance and transfer of advanced technology .
Moving towards establishing a multi-commodity economy .
Achieving technology transfer and training expert manpower n high levels .
Creating jobs in downstream industries , and promoting social and economic development of the region .
Motives for establishing the Engineering Polymers Production Complex in Bandar Imam Special Zone :

The decision to established the Engineering Polymers Complex Bandar Imam Special Economic Zone was made on the basis of the following parameters :

Easy access to feedstock and raw materials
Availability of centralized utilities in the zone
Availability of gas , as the main feedstock and fuel source
Easy access to road and rail transport as means of supply to domestic markets
Access to maritime transport allowing easy export of surplus goods, and import of raw materials and goods needed for production
Contributes to development and growth of the region
